2TB Seagate Barricuda HDD working perfectly fine up until I tried to format it today. When I go to format it it gives me a different error depending on how I try to format it.

In Window's Disk Management
Virtual Manager - Failed to format drive, Unable to access drive unless it is formatted.

Through CMD with Admin or without.
It never goes above 0%

In Seagate's Discwizard:
Failed to write to sector '2,122' of hard disk '3'. Failed to write the snapshot manager drive. (0x1000DA) Unknown status. (0x9) The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0xFFF0)

I would LIKE to format the drive fat32, but honestly I'd format it at ntfs if I could lol.. I think the HDD is bad yes? I mean computer still recognizes it and everything but that's as far as it goes!

Thanks all for the help!

If youre trying to do it in windows you cant.

You'll have to either reformat with a windows dvd or boot from something that can format it

If you format it in FAT32 you wont be able to save anything above 4 GB. This is the file limit for FAT32

There are programs that you can use that can convert NTFS to FAT32, not sure if there are free ones though

heres one

Wont let me format as NTFS either, guess that was worth mentioning as well. This isn't a request of how to format FAT32, because I'm fully aware of the limitations for that. My issue is the errors popping up in either FAT32 AND/OR NTFS.

if you want to wipe your boot drive. where windows is. you'll need to boot to a different environment. (freeDOS, linux etc.) you cannot wipe the disk while its in use. Would be like asking you to try to paint the outside of the house from the inside. you need to leave the house (windows) to paint the outside(format).

Well, I'm not entirely sure where you guys got the idea that it was a boot drive, obviously I wouldn't be trying to wipe a boot drive from within windows. So to verify it's not a boot drive, just a regular old data drive. You guys sure are covering ALL bases lol. It's a standard data drive that wont let me format it.

On the trying different cables, it's a SATA drive so no I have not tried IDE, I'm not even sure it's possible but it wouldn't benefit from the 6GBps that Sata holds.

I specified (SATA/IDE) to cover all bases and let you know I meant the data interface cable between the drive and motherboard, which could be on either of those interfaces depending on the age, not the power cables, etc. Now I know its SATA, do you have a spare SATA cable you could try in place of the one currently being used?

Oh yeah, I've tried different cables and another HDD is using the cables it was using previously without fault. I've also tried putting it in an external HDD enclosure with no luck.

Yeah, sorry I've been busy with RL stuff didn't mean to sound like a jerk.

IDK if you want to spend more money on the issue but I have used a program called spinrite to repair drives with myriad issues. it's 90 bucks but worth every penny if you use it regularly it will prolong the active life of your drives. can be found at grc.com if your curious

Eh, I appreciate it but I don't generally have a drive go bad. Actually I got really lucky this time because I just striped the drive. I can get another 2TB drive with a 2yr warranty for 90$ so that's probably the route I'll take. Sadly this drive is JUST over the 2 yr warranty marker or I'd just do a RMA on it.
