I’m starting this write-up as I troubleshoot so not to forget anything. I’ll post if I run out of ideas for testing.
My specs are as follows:
Monitor: 1440p
GPU: XFX HD7850
CPU: i7=4770 3.4ghz
Motherboard: z77 ASROCK Extreme
Memory: 16gb of something
PSU: AX760 Corsair
OS: Windows 10 64bit
I was playing Overwatch yesterday and my screen went green and my computer stopped responding. I had been playing the game with no problems for a couple of weeks. However, occassionally I would get the Display Driver has stopped working and recovered message for the past 2-3 weeks when doing anything really (maybe longer). I tried to find a solution to this in and of itself, but never could.
Upon restarting my computer and testing things out, I figured things were okay. But, I turned on the game and crashed again. This time I got a video_tdr error and BSOD upon starting. No beeps. Eventually, my computer wouldn’t start outside of safemode. So I have a pretty poor GPU, it’s about 2-3 years old, but it has run several games in the past. (But, I do have a QHD monitor that likely put extra strain).
The fan seems to get power and turns on, but the GPU never seems to heat up.
Notes:
- At the present moment, the image the GPU is producing on my second monitor has two large pixelated green lines on the background.
- The card shows up in device manager.
- When plugged into my monitor I get a black screen, if disabled in device manager I get the two green lines described above.
- I live in NY and it's about 80 degrees outside. In my apartment it is closer to 72, but maybe overheating has finally happened.
- I've had the card for 2 years now.
To fix this I:
1. Uninstalled using DDU in safemode and attempted to reinstall the catalyst drivers several times. My PC crashed at various points of these installation attempts. (Only when trying to install the GPU drivers.) The most recent attempt installed the card, but any attempt to diagnose or use the card yields this:

2. I have simply plugged my PC into the wall, instead of my power strip (which IS cheap, but has never given me problems in the past).
3. Reset windows. This fixed the BSOD, but only because I started using the onboard GPU.
4. I moved the GPU to a different PCIE slot. Did nothing.
5. I have run GPUz and will post that screenshot:

Things I can’t do because I don’t have the parts or don’t see the point (could be wrong):
1. Try another GPU, if I buy a new one (looking like I will), then all this testing is for naught anyway. I have no old GPU to stick in there right now.
2. Try the GPU in another PC.
3. Try another PSU, this could be a problem, but I don’t think so.
4. Resetting the BIOS.
5. Try different PCIE connectors (no extra cables that I can find).
6. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers with the GPU out, the AMD software does not allow for this as it seems to really want to auto-detect the GPU.
I’m likely going to pick up a new GPU today because I can, and (why not that one was REALLY old 😛). But, I figured I’d post this and maybe someone could help me out just in case the problem is non-GPU related and I wouldn't want to ruin a new GTX 980 or whatever I end up getting!
Sorry for the long post, figured I'd give some information. Some people seem to declare their GPU dead after starting their computer and getting no image only to discover they didn't plug in their monitor. Rest assured I have plugged in my monitor to the GPU.
TLDR: GPU not working (most likely dead from overheat), tested it to the best of my ability. just want to be sure it's not the rest of my set-up before I go out and replace it.
