I'm trying to see what I need to play the new games coming out on the market at a constant FPS on higher settings (Battleborn, DOOM, Overwatch). Currently, these games are running at poor FPS even on the lowest settings, so I feel like I need to make some changes. Here's my current CPU and GPU. My budget would be preferably below $300, but I don't know if that's enough to get anything worth it/better than what I already have.

GPU: EVGA GTX 780
CPU: AMD FX 4300 Quad-Core

Thanks! :)

That processor is crap.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($194.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H170M-DS3H Micro ATX LGA1151...

Thanks for the quick response. If I consider getting the CPU, should I get the others as well? Not very good with computers yet, so an explanation would be appreciated.

I must say the i3 6100 is a complete winner it simply can not be beat price performance wise, gaming it barely places behind the current i5 and ahead of most haswell i5's when it comes to gaming. The last review I saw it made spending more appear completely pointless where gaming is concerned.

I get the impression this is why it took so long to be released

That's good to know! Will I need any other upgrades to go with it such as power supply (currently 620w)

That's why I suggested it in my parts list i gave you 😉

You should use pcpartpicker to give us your current specs, can't tell if the PSU is good enough by wattage alone (just like you can't compare processors by frequency!)

No your current power supply is fine, the newer cpu will actually use around half the amount of power.

Which PSU do you have? Not all games benefit from hyper-threading. So an i5 is better.

Solution

All games that benefit from multiple cores benefit from multithreading. And in fact, the i3 6100's faster clock speed of 3.7 vs 3.5 max (with turbo) onthe i5 means it's better for DX11 games that aren't well threaded.
