System specs:

Windows 10 professional 64 bit
As the title suggests, I believe my beloved graphics card is beginning to fail on me, but I'm here for either some confirmation from some experts, or a hopeful second opinion. Recently, I've been getting strange graphical artifacts and glitches, such as purple/black/green squares in certain games and benchmarks, and occasionally a hard crash. However, one thing I had noticed is that Far cry 3 and Valley benchmark both run fine in Ultra settings, so long as anti-aliasing is disabled. older games such as team fortress 2, unreal tournament 99, and age of empires run fine regardless of settings. I should clarify that previously I was able to run far cry 3, 4, shadow of mordor, all on high/ultra without issue.
These issues have persisted for just over 2 weeks. I have tried reinstalling windows, first from a recovery install, and then later a clean install to no avail. I have reinstalled the drivers several times, I have swapped the RAM, I put new thermal paste on my CPU and GPU, I have tried using my secondary PCIE slot on my motherboard. I have monitored system temperature using MSI afterburner, I have even tried turning my GPU clock speed down and turning voltage up. I should mention that my hd 7970 came factory overclocked courtesy of Sapphire, I disabled the overclock and it still didn't help.
I'm sure everyone is aware of how expensive GPU's are right now, and even though I'm having issues, it still runs most games fine, but if it fails on my mid semester, I won't hesitate to replace it, suggestions would be helpful. I'm on a budget, but willing to invest 250-300 USD max. Another interesting question, even though my card could be showing age, would it be useful to a bitcoin miner? it'll run valley benchmark on ultra for 12+ hours as long as anti aliasing is lower than 8x.
