Potentiometers are effective only for a small range every time. Does anyone know?

12 volt power supply to the main potentiometer, and then separated out to other potentiometers,
But the main potentiometer only has the last small range effective,
And potentiometer is a single circle 2K2

I worked in a TV shop during college. There were tube TVs that were 30 years old, that wire wound potentiometers were still good after a shot of contact cleaner and some motion. Using variable resistors is an inefficient way to lower voltage these days. What kind of amperage are we talking about 100mA or 1000A ?
