I have an old server which I got from my work to fixup and place in the serverrack to do fun stuff with. It's a write-off for them but good enough for me

It's a DL360 G6 with 1 backplane and I want to connect 6 disks... Which leaves me negative two spots. A new backplane with cables is around 40 euros on ebay so this is still a possibility but I just realised there may be a cheaper option.

I've seen there are Mini-SAS to Sata cable for like 15 euros which leaves me with the power to sort out.

Which would be easy because I have a 6 pin male (PCIE) to 2 * 3 pin molex cable hanging around the house so I thought why not just do a male male molex on it and hook a molex to sata on the disks. I would be done withing 20 euros.
(FYI the only power connector is on the motherboard and that's a 6 pin female.)

But when I was searching for a Molex to Sata they where all 4 pin molex connectors but the connector on the PCIE cables are only 3 pin molex.

Does this even matter? Or should I not bother with the connectors and just buy a HDD backplane and cables instead?

TL;DR

Can you power a HDD over a 3pin molex connector?

The cable I have with the molex connectors looks like this:

The PCIe connector only provides 12V and Ground but no 5V

The link show a Male Molex to Male PCIe power connector for a video card.
If at all, you would need Female PCIe to Female Molex connectors; however, that would mean that you are missing the 5V Pin which is the fourth wire.

Would these work with your other connectors:

Well the problem is that the connector on my motherboard is a female 6 pin.
So I had your idea with those but from a 6 pin to sata power to molex to satapower with some connectors in between.

That said I found something that could work on aliexpress.

That togehter with a 6pin to sata power

Should work I guess.
Still thing about if I need the other disks and all the trouble for this. but thanks for the thoughts anyway. I have been to a couple of local shops and the all tell me the same thing:
If there is 24/7 power on it from a pcie 6-pin, don't do it with loads of molex connectors. They will fry because of the temperatures.
