[SOLVED] power-on hours for Ironwolf 14TB model ST14000VN0008

Hi all, for this HDD, the specs say power-on hours is 8760 which is 1 year. What does this mean? I doubt the HDD only is good for 1 year. does it mean if the HDD stays powered on for more than a year at a time it could fail?

That can't be true even old old hard drives from back in the day could do 40k hours easily. That thing will spion 100k hours to be honest unless it dies before that. 🙈🤞✝😷

power on means writing and reading (work time)
while it´s in standby, this value will not decrease

it´s just an indicator with others

it´s only an informational value

It's just telling you that the drive is rated for continuous use, ie 8760 hours per year.

Realistically, we expect that the usage time for HDDs in the desktop environment is, on average, about 2400 power-on hours/year, corresponding to about 6.5 hours/day. Our expectations for the nearline or mission-critical environments are that the drive will be used 100% of the time (24 hours/day) resulting in 8760 power-on hours/year.
