Power Options - "Some Settings are managed by your system administrator"

Of course my account is an administrator, and I've also tried using the true administrator account with the "net user Administrator active"-command. Sadly, I can't change my Power Options, because it just says that they're being managed by the system administrator. Obviously, that's quite annoying considering my external hard drive keeps dis- and reconnecting once in a while because I can't change my USB-options.

I've had this problem (not being able to change the settings) for a few months now and I didn't really care, but since my external hard drive startet disconnecting regularly a few days ago, I now want to take control again. Interestingly, I've fixed the problem with my external HDD a few years ago, but since I've moved a few days ago it reappeared, even though the only thing that has changed is that I removed my old (former secondary) GPU.

I've also tried consulting Google, but that just leads me to outdated links and solutions for problems I don't have (lots of people seem the get the same message when trying to update Windows).

I really don't get how even the admin account is not good enough for this easy task.

How can I change my power options?

To be honest, I can't really say "no" because I don't know what a domain is exactly, but since it seems to be something you'd have in an office, I guess not.

It's the PC I use at home in my own home network.

Go to start -> run and type gpedit.msc in the run box. Navigate to Computer configuration, Administrative templates, system, Power management. Check through the settings to see if any are configured. Set the ones that are enabled to disabled or not configured.

I had to download and install gpedit first, as it apparently isn't included in Win 7 Home Premium. But when I tried navigating to Power Management, I realized that there is no such thing. There is a "Group Policy" folder though, which might be what I'm looking for. But everything is "not configured", so this likely isn't the troublemaker.

Might be a registry issue, if not GPO.

Go to start -> run -> regedit and click OK

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings


If there's a registry key called ActivePowerScheme, that might be the issue. You'll have to delete this key.

Thanks, that fixed my main problem. Unfortunately, "Selective USB-Suspend" (or whatever it's called on English Windows versions) apparently wasn't the reason why my external hard drive keeps reconnecting every 30 minutes or so.

You don't happen to know why this happens, do you?

It might be a bad USB port. Have you tried a different port? You should also check the USB cable from the external HDD for obvious damage that could be causing the issue. If all else fails, you might try to check the disk for bad sectors or corruption using crystal disk info.

As far as I remember, I did try using another port, but it still didn't work. The funny thing is, I changed the port (again?) and now it works flawlessly. I might have two bad USB-Ports.
