I've got a fairly new pc, (under 6 mos. old) with a 400W power supply, Nvidia 6800GT graphics card. According to what I've been researching, including this article http://www.gamergod.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=177 a 550W power supply is low end. Will I see any kind of difference in heating, performance, etc. if I get a 550 Watt Power supply?

It won't have as much load on it therefore it will run cooler, be quieter, and likely keep more stable voltages.
You of course want to get a quality one though, a generic so called "550watt" will be garbage. Go with a well known brand like Antec, Fortron Source, etc.

"A 550W power supply is low end"? Well, the quality of the power supply is completely dependant on the manufacturer.

If you want a top quality power supply for a reasonable price, I'd recommend the Fortron Source or Sparkle Power 530W power supply.
