Hi there Tom's Hardware!
I currently have the following system:
CPU: Intel i7-4770K @ 3.5Ghz
GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0 4GB
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866MHz
Mobo: Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H
Power Supply: 500W (brand unknown)
Case: Cooler Master HAF 922
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster XL2370 Full 1080p HD (23in)
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
HDD: 3TB Western Digital Black
I am a gamer, and am about to upgrade my GPU to an EVGA GTX 1080 FTW ACX 3.0 8GB and I will also eventually upgrade my monitor to either 1440p or 4K. However, I feel the need to upgrade the power supply since, even though EVGA's site says minimum 500W for the 1080, I would rather play it safe and get a 600W, and my current power supply is old and needs to be upgraded. At the same time, the higher quality power supplies seem to only come in 550W and 650W.
I need to know if getting a 650W power supply is okay if I currently have a CyberPower 1000AVRR (Model: CP1000AVRLCD) battery backup/surge protector that says it outputs 600W.
If not, is a 550W power supply going to be okay with my setup, but with a 1080 FTW instead of a 970 FTW, and possibly another 8GB of RAM?
Please note: I do not need the computer to run for long periods of time using the battery only, just need enough time to save my work and shut down.
Also, if anyone would like to help, I'd love to hear suggestions for power supplies, as it's hard to tell the quality sometimes. I'm currently looking at EVGA, but am open to others (like Corsair).
