Power Supply Failure?

hey there. I recently got a radeon 7970 but my 700w power supply doesn't seem to be able to handle it. Why?

That's not a great psu, 4th tier on the newegg list (not the end all, but a good ranked list based on reviews, experience, etc). See: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx

It's probably time for a better PSU. If that one died, hopefully it didn't harm any components on it's way out.

That could be it, a very low quality PSU which gave them the nickname Crapper Master amongst others.

Yeah CM isn't the best for PSUs.
But even if it can only do 60% it should still handle it. What symptoms are you having?

True.... I had a OCZ ModXStream blow after taking out my 670 and putting a 3-slot heavily OCed 7970 in there. It took only a matter of 4 days for my PSU to blow.

It only crashed once I have now set my 7970 to normal speeds and its running fine i am just worried it will damage my computer

Yeah. Im still waiting on my ThermalTake Grand 850W PSU to arrive.

I would set a quality PSU on the priority list since the Extreme power is on the blowup and kill components list.

Whoa there, first I laughed cause you said it was on the blowup and kill components list but now I'm quite nervous. What if my components that got chocked of power are now broke? Man, I hope once my $70USD ThermalTake 850W Grand comes, and fixes my power delivery problems.

Yeah, as mentioned, I'd change that out pronto.

I was referring to the CM extreme power which is not even close to the OCZ.
At least the OCZ 700 mod had internal protection to protect components. It weakness is the 25amp dual +12 volt rails and one could easily get overloaded which I am guessing in your case.

Yeah, it was overloaded almost 24/7 playing BF4 and benching. Then the first sign of a dying PSU was my CPU performance being cut in half because it was being power choked to death.
