hi, i have a i5 4690k (not overclocked) and i am soon getting a gtx 1080 from a friend of mine. i was wondering if my 500w psu can handle my pc. my psu is a cooler master b500 ver.2

Solution
500 good quality will do, but Cooler Master B500 is no good, similar to Corsair VS. I suggest you get a better psu for the sake of your new gpu.

Corsair CX550/CX550M is good budget choice, TX550M is better. If you can spend more, Seasonic Focus plus/EVGA supernova G2/Corsair RMx are better quality units.

Technically it can. It however isn't a very good PSU. The Cooler Master V-series is good. I like the Corsair CX500. The Corsair RM series is even better. The Seasonic G-series and their Focus are good. The EVGA G(G2 and G3) series is also good.

CX500 is no good, newer CX450/550/650 are much better.

"The 430, 500, and 600 watt model of the CXv3 / M models (the one with the Green logo) are DSA-III based unit from CWT. They are based on an old group regulated design. The 750w and 850w models are CWT PUQ-B which utilized DC-DC for the minor rails which will yield better voltage stability than the lower wattage counterpart. All of which are warrant for 3 years and are rated for 30C.

The new gray labeled 450, 550, 650 models are a custom design from CWT (essentially a cost down version of the RM 450-650) are DC-DC regulated, 40C rated, black cables, and a 5 year warranty. The 750 and 850 is still based on the same platform before but has a higher rated bridge rectifier along with all of the changes mentioned with the lower wattage models"

Thanks for that. I knew it was 550 and forgot. I know about their newest labels. But I gave bogus info. Thank you for the correction.

Very good. That'll even support the 1080 Ti. I use their 650W 80+Gold(G-Series) for my 1080 Ti. You have plenty of headroom for OC'ing and extra drives, fans and such. The Focus is a little better than mine.

No. It's a low end unit. Please save some more money and purchase a quality unit. It's almost like an insurance policy for your components. Use a sub-standard PSU and it can cause collateral damage. If it fails it could also ruin any components it's hooked up to. I paid $849+tax for my 1080 Ti. I only spent $69 but I did purchase a quality Gold Rated(only speaks to electrical efficiency) semi-modular Seasonic unit. Quality units have safety features in place that help to avoid those catastrophic collateral deaths.

@ aquielisunari

I wouldn't say Cooler Master MasterWatt 650 is sub-standard, just the cap is not very good. Still a decent buy if you are on a budget.

@ OP

Comments from kitguru: If you are on a strict budget and have only £65 to spare, then the Cooler Master MasterWatt 650 makes for a decent enough purchase. I just have concerns about long term reliability due to the adoption of budget oriented Chinese TEAPO capacitors throughout the design. For an extra £20 you could get an 80 Plus Gold unit with Japanese capacitors inside. And that’s the true foundation for a reliable power supply.

I will get TX550M on that website: https://www.komplett.no/product/915831/datautstyr/pc-komponenter/stroemforsyning/enheter/corsair-tx550m-550w-psu?offerId=KOMPLETT-310-915831#

Not much more expensive than cooler master 550 but much better quality imo.
