I currently have a 230W psu and this is not enough for my new gpu, the sapphire 7870 ghz OC edition. If I were to upgrade to a 550 or 600W psu, would I need to upgrade anything else or would anything overheat? My current configuration: AMD Bulldozer 4.4ghz, AMD Radeon 6670 2gb graphics card, MSI professional series mother board, 230W psu (not sure what brand), 16gb ram (again, not sure what brand). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not quite sure what to say. Do you live in a country where the power at the wall is 230Volts, or did you mean to state it was a 230WATT psu? Also, look at the label on the side of the PSU for brand, model and power - especially the +12v power in amps, not watts.
According to AMD/Radeon the 7870 Ghz edition (non-OC) requires a minimum 500 watt psu for the system power, with a minimum of 23amps on the +12v rail: It is NOT the total wattage that is most important, but the total current available on that 12v rail
Most quality built/namebrand psu's with 500-600 watts will have more then enough power for your system: Quality units are Seasonic, XFX, Antec, EVGA V series, Corsair (not RM units, they are not perfected yet).
Here are two links that list PSU's by quality levels. AVOID Tier 4 and 5 units.

Repost with the requested psu info and your budget (in your local currency) and we can offer up some suggestions.

Any of those have more then enough power for your new card and system. If those don't agree with your budget, then all I can tell you is make certain you buy a reputable unit: Something made by Seasonic, Corsair, XFX, Antec, Enermax. Do more research if need be, expecially on Tom's and at jonnyguru.com and hardocp.com etc. to find out who really manufactures the psu you become interested in and what the professional review have to say about it. The three I listed are all really good and well built units.
Looking forward to your reply.
