Well you were right, turns out the PSU in the Dell tower I had purchased did not include the required 8 pin PCI power cable for my gtx 970.

Dell towers aren't really designed for upgrades. Especially the power. It is the bare minimum needed to run parts. It might be different in their Alienware models.

It sucks to buy something and then find it doesn't work in what you have.

Oh and yes, I go through many new parts since 5 years ago. I have upgraded to a blazing fast 8th generation celeron intel processor, and a gtx 1050. everything works fine. can play rust and gta ,and eft at max settings 1440p at 100+ fps.
