Hello, I accidentally had the ECO mode set to OFF on my EVGA Supernova 850G2 power supply and the fan was spinning for about 5 months time. It pulled so much dust and some hair from my dog inside the PSU, that had me worrying of any sort of PSU failure, if it's possible! I regretted it so much that i didn't check in time the ECO setting, but I need your help on how to remove most of the junk inside the PSU! I know i am not allowed to open it for safety and warranty reasons, and that pretty much makes the case 10 times worse!

What should i do? Can dust and hair reach the components in the PSU and cause any sort of damage or shorting, even tho i see some plastic protection above the components (capasitors etc) of the PSU?

The reason I'm so paranoid about it, is because I have some very high-end hardware (980 Ti, 3770k, Maximus IV Extreme) and the unstableness i feel from my PSU that will destroy/damage them is killing me! Please help!

It's reasonable for you to be worried and good that you ask for advice. It's generally not ideal to have dust and hair inside your PSU and PC in general, therefore you want to ideally keep it clean and clean it properly form time to time.

Plenty of guides around that show you how to open it and then clean it.

Potentially all you need is to use a compressed air canister and give it a good "blow" lol. Easier done when the metal shroud is off. As such I don't think it will catch fire though or anything but could affect operating temp and fan performance ifthe hair got caught near the middle of the fan.

So, no frying or damaging of components, just higher temps in the PSU? I have a very powerful hair dryer and i could place it up close to the metal holes of the PSU and blow in it at full load, will that also work?

If you can blow cool air with it, sure. Wouldn't use hot air though.

Blowing it in those holes will only do so much though. If you take the shroud off you can very easily get rid of all the gunk. One has to be VERY careful though as you can easily get a nasty shock if you don't know what you're touching.

I can't void a 10 year warranty to clean my power supply, I'm sure you understand! The best thing i can do, is blow cold air from the one side, and have a vacuum on the other side to hopefully catch hair that happen to try to get out!

This was their reply to my question!

Thanks for the detailed information - first, please do not try to open the PSU, not only for EVGA Power Supplies, this is a general rule - normally there couldn´t happen anything, if you want the only way would be to put it out from the system, hold the fan and blow within some air pressure inside the PSU - additional there is a circulation, which means inside \ ouside, so don´t worry - please let me know if we can further assist.

Two things:

DO your best to clean but not damage the PSU and void the warranty. If it all works fine then it is fine for now.

second...get a filter for the PSU to put infront of the intake of the PSU...It can be a fine mesh type plastic, metal or sheet. Anything with fine holes which let air in but will catch dust and hair for the biggest part. This will avoid you catching more unwanted gunk.

Like this...but it can be DIY fro ma home improvement shop that you cut to shape to fit the case. http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/cooling/fanaccessories/Akasa/GRM120-AL01-BK.html?gclid=CNyMp92SrMoCFdgaGwodggIF5Q#utm_source=google&utm_medium=base&utm_campaign=products

There's no worry for that! My case filter does a pretty good job and the ECO mode that turns off the fan completely until enough power is required (pretty much never) does an excellent job of keeping stuff out! The problem was, that i left the fan on for 5 months that's why everything happened! I have a similar build as yours and you have a lower PSU but still does its job perfectly!

EVGA Supernova P2 1000 watt and for the screens it is still undecided. Down to a couple of runners.

Really limited options with high-end monitors! That power supply is a beast, however are you ok with the red VGA cables? If i were you I would pick the Supernova 1000 T2 that has all black and has even better efficiency! Btw I took out the PSU and the hairdryer and vacuum on the other side did a massive job, I see no dust anywhere inside!

Nice, good to hear it worked.

My case is white and black, black mobo and parts, with strix GPU red/white/black, red led lighting and custom individually sleeved cables in red white black....

I like red ;-) however i will resleeve em anyway

Nice! Mine is all white with purple led fans on the radiator and excaust side of the PC, with the Hall of Fame all white 980TI, and the leds make a reflection on the silver backplate, making the GPU purple as well.. Truly stunning ^^
