Power supply to video??

I'm trying to help a friend find out some information. He was playing a new game on his pc when the screen went black. The monitor, keyboard and mouse do not work. And you can't turn the computer off via the front power switch. (You have to unplug it to power it down.)

He took it to a local pc place and they told him...the power supply to the video card went out. And something about the number 800. (I don't know if that's a code or if they were talking about a 1-800 number??)

They want $100 to fix it, but if what they're talking about is a new power supply, he can buy one and I can install it for him. But I want to be sure it's that, and not something with graphics card itself. I don't know exactly what is video card is, but I know it's a newer one. It's pretty well sized, has 2 fans, some (what I am assuming is copper) piping on it, and needs to be plugged in via the power supply. (It can't run just off the motherboard.)

But I figured I'd see what you guys say before I try to help out a friend. Do you think he needs a new power supply, or a new video card?

It's hard to say what it is without knowing which gpu and which psu you're talking about.

Given the description, I agree with the techs. But without full system details we can only speculate

The way it was worded, they may have been talking about a psu cable to the video card. But a new power supply would have the new cables as well.

My guess is that the power supply failed. What are the components or computer model?

The obvious way to check this would be to get out a multimeter and test the power supply. If it's fried, then yes, installing a new one yourself is the way to go.

I didn't know if that would be enough information. I was hoping it would be. He's bringing over the computer tomorrow, so I'll be able to tell you all the specs then.

I was thinking they were talking about the power supply itself too, as a new PS would cost about $50, then throw in $50 of labor. I don't see them fixing a $200-$300 video card problem for a mere $100. But like I said, I wanted to get your guy's opinions first.

The "800" could be wattage they were talking about which is way to much for a single gpu system.
