I had shut down my email just before the power went out, but I guess I hadn't finished shutting down, and now I can't open it. It says it is in use by another application and to shut down my computer, which I have already done many times. How can I fix this?

Solution
Next time you see the warning, instead of shutting down, press Control Shift and Escape together to open the Task Manager. Click the Processes tab and then double click the heading of the CPU column. That brings the highest resource users to the top of the list - post back the names of those using any resources or, if you prefer, just click End Task on any of them which are not your e-mail handler. Go back and try to send or receive mail - see if it works.
