I want to use my 3.5 inch desktop hard drive as an external drive for my laptop. I have a 2.5 inch USB SATA hard drive adapter, but it can't power this drive.
My idea is moving the desktop close to the laptop and turning on the desktop to power the drive, with the adapter connected to the hard drive and laptop. Will this work?

would seem to be much easier to get a drive dock or an external enclosure for this drive rather than going through all the trouble.
makes the drive portable and if using a USB powered dock any old 2.5" or 3.5" can be accessed the same way.

Probably, but this is an absurd solution. Hard drive enclosures for 3.5" drives can be found for under $20.
