Powering gtx 980 ti with vga cord but non vga psu port.

I have a vga power cable (shown below) and a 700 w power supply with this power connector (below) and a 980 ti. I have 1 connector set up with the given adapter but need the 2nd and my cord doesn't fit into the psu because of the little bar between the top right pins. If I were to remove that bar, would it power my gpu without damaging it?

There's no reason the cable should not fit as is. Are you plugging the 8 pin end in the PSU and the 6+2 pin end into the card?

I think the problem is the 8 pin connector wont plug into the PSU itself... Looking at the connector two of the pins are connected across the top edge, so they would run into the slots on the unit and not go in.

Good eye. I didn't notice that. I wonder why that was made that way. Wrong cable for the PSU?

I would have to assume so, because that is physically blocking the use of it in any of the red slots...
