Hi

Quick question. I have a Corsair CX550M PSU. I have a Palit Geforce 1060 3GB GPU.

Anyway. I want to know if it is okay to power my GPU with an old molex-6 pin pci-e adapter instead of the bundled 2x 6+2 pin cable that comes with PSU.
The PSU does come with a dual 6+2 pci e power connectors, so I know for a fact that it will drive my 1060 without any hassle, but for visual reasons = as little cables in a small case as possible,
I have used the first mentioned solution (adapter from 2x molex).

Everything is running fine like this, but:

Can it damage the GPU in the long run? I read something about rails having to be utilized properly from the power supply. It is also for obvious reasons, connected through the SATA/Periphial port on the PSU, not the PCI-e one. Does this matter?

The adapter came from an old PC from 2008. (This used to power a GTX 260!!) Does this matter? Do cables get "too old" ?

I also noticed that there are only five wires on this adapter, as opposed to six on the one that came with the PSU. Do I need the sixth?

Does it affect the lifetime of the GPU to be powered like this instead of a dedicated PCI-e power cable? The reason I ask, is because I heard something about "rough" power that is especially bad for RAM and graphics cards. I imagine that "rough" power might occur from a cheap old adapter?

Like I said, everything is working fine with this setup, and I intend to keep it this way if it is good to go.

dont use adapters on mediocre units

dont tempt fate

I do understand what you are saying, but everything is stable and fine. I really want to avoid using the bundled cable as it makes a right mess out of both looks and airflow.

Judging by his initial title, it seems OP might have problems with managing cables. You can buy extensions so it would look awesome and cleaner.

As mentioned by other replies, it's not recommended.
