I am situated in a room above my router and the Wi-Fi signal is terrible. I spoke to my internet provider and they recommended I purchased a powerline adapter. I did some research and bought a TP-LINK TL-PA4010PKIT yesterday. I plugged it in, set it up with my desktop upstairs and it was working perfectly. At the end of the day I shut down my computer (as you do), and went to sleep. Today, when I woke up I wasn't able to connect to the internet through the wired connection. I was still able to connect to the terrible Wi-Fi connection but not the wired. It has that yellow exclamation mark (!) over it and when I troubleshoot it, it tells me that the "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP Configuration. I'm quite lost as I have researched and seen people with the same problem as me being told that their powerline adapter is fried & to replace it.

Let me clear this up for you.
If you have a power line adapter, and it can provide a wired connection from it, and a wireless signal from the adapter in your room. It is classed as a repeater in network terms.

It will in most cases, or should have a log in menu.
Much like the main router page settings of your main router if used.

You connect to the power line adapter via a Lan cable.
Then enter the ip address listed to enter the setup menu of the power line adapter.
If it exists.

(see power line manual for login IP/Password settings, or a sticker located on the adapter it`s self).

The option of Dhcp must be disabled on the power line module in the settings pages.
Save the new settings or changes and exit the menu of the power line adapter.

Turn it off.
Then go down stairs and power cycle your main router, modem.
Let it setup it`s self up again.

Next turn your power line adapter on in your room, let it power cycle and setup.

You should then get an Internet connection from the Power line adapter every time if using wired or wireless connection through it from the wall socket power point of your bedroom ok.

Your other option is to write down the IP the power line adapter has been given by your main router modem if connected to it, along with the sub net address values and the Dns server ip values, making sure the DHCP option of the power line adapter is disabled, or turned off.

You then right click on your Ethernet adapter of your computer and set all the values taken from the power line settings. and change the settings to what we call a static, or fixed ip.

Once filled in the lan adapter, network settings click apply, ok.
Restart your pc and next time windows loads you will have an internet connection via the wired cable connection from the pc to the power line adapter in the wall socket of your bedroom.

Always read the manual right through, people just cannot be arsed to do this in a lot of cases, its all there to get the device working right and is important.
More to the point you would not need to ask the question on a forum, if the manual had been read thoroughly. Anyway it should work fine and right each time you connect if you follow the advice and procedures above. All the best.
