Hey guys/gals,
So the story goes I got sick and tired of wireless internet in my house as im on the top floor and the signal wasn't strong enough for gaming and such so i invested in some power line Ethernet these to be precise: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0084Y9N3O/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00

now all i get is continuous disconnecting and the only error i get after hours of troubleshooting is "local area network doesn't have a valid ip configuration" now a quick Google says re install my LAN drivers I've done that still the same even found older versions of the driver still nothing.

its getting pretty frustrating as i get a link for a while then it will cutout and force me to go back to wireless which is so unreliable but more than the powerline.

anyone have any ideas about which part will be causing the problem ill list the full system specs and all networking gear connected.

my computer:
I5 650
MSI p55 gd85
16gb kingston hyperx genesis
xfx radeon hd 7970 black edition
Corsair TX650

network:
BT homehub 3.0 modem+router
TP-Link PA411KIT AV500 500 Mbps

Many Thanks

Like wireless these type of devices are susceptible to interference. You need to plug them directly into wall outlets, no power strips or extension cords.

They prefer to be on the same circuit breaker which I assume is not a option for you since they are on different floors.

All you can really do is try other outlets and see if it helps. Mostly things with motors are the cause of interference. I know I had a ceiling fan that would take my power things down no matter where in the house I was using them.

Unfortunately the powerline things just refuse to work in some houses.

I agreed with everything John said. There is one other thing that you can do -- if you have something with a motor plugged into one of the circuits that you need to use for the powerline adapters, plug that motor device into a 6 foot extension cord and then into the socket. The extension cord will attenuate the interference as well as any powerline filter that you can find.

right i didn't know about the extension cord issue but I've tried putting it directly into the wall still the same issues 🙁

I don't have any fans or motor powered objects in my house unless all the fans in my PC count?

many thanks :)

Last time I had this problem was in a house with more than one ring main - one for each floor, actually. Try your powerline adapters with both on the ground floor or look in the fusebox or the circuit breaker box to see if you have more than one ring main.

Back on to John-b961's suggestion - your fridge has a motor and so does a freezer so try extending the power cable from both of those.

hey,

It maybe that then this house was only made 1 year ago maybe it has multiple rings ill have to ask my dad cause i have no idea 🙁

the fridges and freezers run of extensions in the garage about 15 meters away from the power line so i hope its not that.

many thanks

If the house is that new what kind of cable did they use for the phone wiring. It is very common to run cat5 or cat6 cable for phones. You may be able to rewire some of the outlets to let you run data over the cable.

Re-reading the original post on this one, I wonder if the IP configuration is actually the problem. If the Powerline adapters are wireless capable, the setup will have created a gateway of its own and that would also affect the LAN so it may be that automatic DHCP isn't the best setting.

The power line aren't WIFI compatible just wired i didn't want a repeater so to speak :)

So do i change the DHCP in the routers menu and will it affect anything else like phones or laptops?

nah it uses old style BT wiring iv asked my friend about that and he said you can kind of get it to work but that's allot of hassle plus there isn't any phone wires upstairs 3rd floor (my room)

solved it now i needed to revert the homehub back to a previous firmware to stop it doing that many thanks
