Hello tomshardware

i was following this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toLYV7th0L8 and ran in to a problem merging my partition down to 30gb because windows had files in use at the end of the drive..

i then cycled through some different programs to find out if i could move the files and found out i had to it with a program from boot, but had just downloaded Powerquest partition magic and thought hey why not try.

and upon of opening the program it said it had found an error on a sector and asked i would like it to be fixed, (with alot of jibberish in bewteen about disk data that i dont understand)

I clicked yes and about 5 more windows came one after one and i clicked yes to all of them thinking it maybe was good for the drives or something...

But upon rebooting. windows could not boot.. so i thought oh well just reinstall and everything would be good.. but i then reinstalled everything to find out my read perfomance in crystal diskmark had dropped to 123 max from 129.. and no matter WHAT i do it always TOPS out at 123..

And this just got me wondering..

Have i accidentally removed some sort of important part of the drives firmware or something to [watch your language] up its performance?? is this even possible through a program in windows??

and also the drives i think i [watch your language] up are a Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750gb, and a Seagate ST9320320AS 320gb. they are both ancient and i know windows can have a impact on crystaldiskmark..

But the real question is. is this possible? i mean if the firmwares were damaged in any way woudnt it manifest in data loss and not being recognisable?

and also the 750gb only shows 698gb and the 320gb only 298.. i know this is normal but what is stored here? and arent that section locked off so that a program like partition magic wouldnt be able to change them??

i bet im anwsering my own question here but just wanna make sure partition magic hasnt degraded the performance in any way..

If the drives had any sort of firmware damage they'd likely not be working at all. Partition software has no affect on a drives firmware, it'll only adjust the partition table (a few sectors at the beginning of the drive) and possibly move around data to fit within the new boundaries of the partition.

Are you sure you didn't install Windows onto a different drive than you were running on before? Likely that Samsung drive is a good deal faster than the Seagate one.

Yes im completely sure its the same config.. got windows on a ssd and the samsung drive next to it and got 129 mb/s seq read.. i then made the config of windows on samsung (no ssd) and the seagate next to it and ran the partiton magic. then i decided to go back to sdd config and take the seagate out.. and then only getting 123mb max speed on the samsung now ?? :S 🙁

But thank you that was what i thougt that the firmware couldnt be messed with..

the only other thing i could see as a difference is that im using a 4 wired sata power cable now as to before i was using one with 5 for the samsung?

But as to my knowledge this wouldt make a difference am i right?

and yes the samsung is 7200rpm 32mb cache and the seagate is only 5400rpm and 8mb cache and has alwayys topped out aounnd 70ish seq read.. so would be sorry if that had gotten any slower also.. but i cant tell with the seagate if i think its degraded, partition manager just ''corrected'' some errors on that drive to.. while it was connected ... but yea the samsung is def the fastest of the two!
