Pre-build to new build Windows...Newbie.

Hello,
I have a pre-built HP desktop PC. It came pre installed with windows 8 installed. I didn't receive any CD's or anything but through the control panel i see the Product ID. This product id ends with OEM.

My question: can i build myself a completely new pc and still use this windows. I understand i need to re-install it. Im planning on using the same HDD. thanks and i have never wiped a HDD or anything so a step-by-step would be helpful.

My past experience with switching hdds into new builds wasn't great. When I switched hdd's the new motherboard didn't except any of the old files on the hdd including windows. It gave me the option to completely wipe the hard drive before usage however.

I have used windows 7 64bit oem on about 6 builds so shouldn't be a problem

Swapping the HDD will probably work from the point of view of W8 being able to adapt to it's new situation, but it's highly doubtful if it will activate as it's a volume licence so called 'White Box' OEM and thus tied to the original Motherboard. Sure, some will report pre-built machine's OS transferring OK, but they are probably from smaller operators not using the 'White Box' version...I suspect you will have to buy your own OEM Windows...

Maybe a little bit to late, but better late then never.

If you still want to do this then create an entire backup, including from your windows with aomei partition manager. It's easy to use but do note that the drive your placing the backup on needs to be the same size as your current hard drive.
After the backup is done you can do whatever you want with the hard drive.

Also normally from windows 8 and above the OS adapts from it's new environment. Every windows has normally basic drivers installed to allow them to run from different computers. it only takes a while untill windows finds the correct drivers and installs them.

I've done this multiple times based on the win8 basic drivers and it always worked. so give it a try.
