I currently have a HTPC, which is basically just another family PC, albeit lower in graphics capability.
Wondering whether something like this Synology NAS would be better?

The PC works as it is but something smaller that is dedicated for streaming media, perhaps quieter that will consume less power is the main driver behind this.

The HTPC currently holds 6 hard drives, although one of those is an SSD with the OS on it. If I bought a Synology, am I right in thinking it would come with a bit of storage for an OS on the motherboard? I wonder if these new fangled NVMe boards could also work for the OS instead of a drive ?

I should also add, we don't have it on all the time. It's just an "on-demand" basis... when we want to watch something, we turn the PC on and load plex using the app on the TV.

Thanks

The NAS you've linked does not come with storage but it does come with options for you to populate the sleds/ports with 3.5" drives. If you read through reviews of the NAS you've linked, it has the option to drop in 2xM.2 SSD's. You might want to weigh how much your proposed NAS build will be in use, considering that the NAS isn't cheap, from what I'm seeing listed on Amazon.

If the NAS will cater to more than 3 system's in your household at all times of the day, without being shut off, then yes it's a worthwhile investment, with the need for adding storage. If the system is used maybe a few hours every week, then you're fine as is.
