[SOLVED] Prebuilt or First build advice

Hi guys,

I have joined these forums in the hope of some expert advice. I am looking to either build or buy a custom desktop for gaming.

having spent most of the day looking at parts etc I stumbled across this site and build in particular. Any advice on whether this build is any good or which parts I should look to upgrade would be welcome.

I am also open to sourcing the individual parts and building myself. It’s something that my late father used to do and I think this experience would be a journey and sentimental in a way.

I will use the pc primarily for gaming and have a 4K monitor.

I, personally, would source the parts and build it yourself. Do away with the hard drive and go with a 1tb m.2 ssd if you can for the mobo and separate 2+tb Sata III ssd for storage. Spend the extra money to save room and not worry about load times.

As far as pre-builts, that's probably the best site for price and parts (they don't give you <Mod Edit> stuff) but you will save about £150 for the same parts. It's always best to build if you can, and you will get the exact parts you want. Have to say though, I'm really impressed with that site as a pre-build. Much better value for money than the same build at PCSpecialist.

Edit - Anyway, I put together the individual parts, had to add some of them as custom and find their price manually, but building yourself would cost approx £1,365 vs the £1489 for pre-built. So not even as bad as I thought previously. But if I were doing my own build I'd spend less on a case (probably about half of that one) and maybe increase storage and/or get a Tomahawk MAX mobo and certainly faster (3600mhz) RAM. Maybe a better gold rated PSU as well, although that one would probably be fine.

Personally, building a PC is a great accomplishment and is something that is not very hard to learn (plus it is very enjoyable), but it does require some time doing research around the subject - Youtube and forums like this is a great tool to use!

I think the main point here may be, are you confident in building a PC? If your answer is No, then perhaps consider doing some research around the subject (looking at build guides on youtube, gaining knowledge around the different components available, as well as the respected brands).

Pre-builts are great for those that want a 'hassle-free' experience (which comes at an extra cost), so if you are not confident building a PC yourself, then it is definitely a good option to go down and more upgradeable than any shop built PC.
