Hi,

Backdrop
I recently bought an LG 27" 4K monitor. I connected it to my Lenovo windows 10 laptop using Amazon Basic mDP to HDMI cable(1080p). During the first hour while I was going through the display settings on my system and exploring the monitor settings, 1/4th part of the screen on the left got black and vertical lines appeared on it. Soon the lines faded but black part remained as it is and my program windows will slide behind the black part on to my laptop display. I tried a lot of things but nothing worked to fix it. I raised a replacement request and the new monitor is on its way.

Question
These questions may sound silly but I don't want to risk wasting my hard earned money by damaging the monitor.
  1. Can a low resolution(1080p ) or low quality(Amazon Basic) data cable damage a monitor?
  2. Can running 4k at 1080p damage it.
  3. I have ordered a Cable matters mDP to DP 4k @ 60 Hz cable. But meanwhile can I connect my monitor with Amazon Basic 1080p cable to run it at 1080p for few days till the 4k cable arrives?
  4. Any other tips to avoid problems with 4k display and to make it last longer?

Thanks

Solution
  1. No.
  2. No.
  3. Yes.
  4. What LG Monitor? Assuming it isn't OLED there is nothing you need to worry about, it will last as long as it lasts. If you live in a humid or very hot environment try to keep the humidity and heat to a reasonable level in whatever room the monitor is in would be the only thing I can think of that might help it's lifespan.

Thanks for your answer that is a relief to hear. Yeah, the monitor is UHD(3840x2160 @ 60Hz) and not OLED.
