Howdy

Currently running a desktop with a q9400 and it just isnt up to snuff for current gen games such as watch dogs 2.

I potentialy have the oppurtunity to get a dell precision t7500 workstation with a single xeon x5645 hexa core lga 1366 cpu and an empty slot for a second one. They are currently selling for 30 bucks on ebay so it wouldnt be hard to get a second one and have 2 hex core xeons running side by side. The thing also has 12gb of ecc ddr3 memory in it already, again the memory for these are cheap on ebay, could get another 12gb for under 20 bucks.

I am on meager budget here, and from what i can judge myself here, it seems i could gget myself a pretty beasty system here for under 200$ and use my current gpu, gtx 750ti. From what i read these cpus perform about on par with a fx6300?

My last system was a fx6300 witch i ran with a 750ti for a while with 8gb ddr3 ram and that ran every current gen game, the witcher 3 for instance with a mix of medium high settings at 1080p at a healthy framerate above 30. Looking to get back to that level of performance again,

It seems that this workstation coupled with my current gtx 750ti should be able to accomplish that and then some, especially if i got a second x5645 cpu for less money than buying a new cpu mobo and ram.

What do you think this t7500 with just one xeon x5645 hexa core cpu and 12gb of ram with my 750ti would be able to pull framerate wise in watchdogs 2 at 1080p?

Also how does having a dual cpu setup effect gaming? Would it get a good boist from the extra cpu processing power of the ectra cpu?

Is there something i am missing here, and it wouldnt be very effective for gaming? Currently at my budget level its looking like my best option for a good performance setup Cpu wise, especialy since i can get a second 6core cpu fir a mere 30bucks and another 12gb of ram for 20.

well you seem sold on the idea for the price , it means 200 for an FX6300. which with a 750ti may play some games, will not play BF1 and those more stressing games to the CPU than the GPU type games. I ran games on a Q8300 with a HD 7870 an 8GB ram (not great games but I am not much of a gamer anyways... but COD 3 and such worked fine.. probably what you will expect to play again.
interesting experiment though...

Well 120 for the for the workstation itself with 1 6core xeon cpu and 12gb ram already installed. So technically 120 bucks for a system that should perform on par with an fx6300? I tried piecing together a fx6300 system on ebay and couldnt do it for that price.

And then the option to add a secpnd 6core xeon later on for 30bucks, but im not sure how well that would second processor would scale pefermance wise with games. One of my main questions for wanting to post this thread

For 120 bucks for the complete workstation this thing out performs my old fx6350 setup with the same exact gtx 750ti. Dont think i cpuld have even gotten a cpu.ram.mobo combo that comes close to this performance for that price let alone the case psu and everything else.

E5640 6 core 12 threads 12mb cache with 12gb ram ddr3 1333 preinstalled just added my own hdd and graphics card.

shawn_75,

I'm a big fan of LGA1366 Precisions and have a T5500 (2X Xeon X5680 /Quadro 4000) and a T3500 (Xeon X5677 / Firepro V5900)

CPU: If you'd like to get the best gaming performance out of a T7500, consider one of these:

Intel Xeon CPU X5687 3.60GHz 12MB 6.4GT/s LGA 1366 Quad-Core CPU SLBVY > $67 or offer

The Xeon X5687 is 4-core @ 3.6 / 3.87 Ghz. The Xeon E5645 is 2,4 /2.67 with a Passmark CPU Mark of 6558 and Single Thread Mark- the important one for gaming- of 1081. That is fine for a server but I don't think will have very good results in gaming even with a fast GPU. For comparison, the CPU /STM scores are 7138 / 1572 The X5677 3.47 / 3.73 that I use is also good: 6984 / 1518 and $12 cheaper,..

For gaming. the single-thread performance is the most important aspect, and the X5687 will give the system the best chance in a T7500.

Disk: Also, the T7500 has an SATAII 3GB/s disk system. Consider one of these:

Dell PERC H310 8-Port PCIe SAS/SATA RAID Controller HV52W with cables > $40 or offer

-and the disk system will run at SATAIII speeds- 6GB/s. I added a PERC H310 to the T5500 and with no other changes the Samsung 840 Passmark Disk score went from 1940 to 2649. I have one for the T3500 but haven't yet installed it.

GTX 750Ti: There are 7X T7500 system on Passmark using the GTX 750 Ti and the highest 3D score is 4273 with a Xeon X5650. That one is particularily good and the others range down to 3260.

They're amazingly good value and you can run them at full bore forever.

Precision T7500: Feel the Weight !
