hey everyone, I have a threadripper system built using this MB.
all of a sudden I get the ASUS "Preparing Automatic Repair" screen, motherboard Q code ends up at 9E
and Windows Automatic Repair feature throws back "Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC"
Screenshots attached.

I'm currently following this guide to see if it can be fixed. The first part of the guide using automatic repair did nothing. now I am at the second part doing a chkdsk on the C drive which is still going, it seems to be taking a while:

does anyone know what else I can try or what it could be?

1| Why is the GPU not populating the first slot on the motherboard?
2| You will need to list the specs to your entire build like so:
CPU:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
considering this is a thread of troubleshooting nature.
3| What BIOS version were you on prior to the issue? Since you can get display, try and see if you can get into BIOS.
4| How old is the PSU in the build?

Hi @Lutfij

1) when i did the build, if i remember correctly, I did accidentally put it in the lower slot. then when i wanted to take it out, no matter how hard I tried, the GPU won't come out of the slot and I did want to try any harder in case of risking any damage to the GPU or motherboard. Does it need to move to the upper slot? if so, I will take it to the shop where I got the parts and get them to remove it.

2) here is the list of specs.

CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X
Motherboard: ASUS - PRIME TRX40-PRO S
Ram: G.Skill - F4-3200C16Q2-256GVK
G.Skill Ripjaws V 256GB (8x32GB) PC4-25600 (3200MHz) DDR4, 16-18-18-38, 1.35v, XMP2.0, Quad Channel Kit

SSD: Samsung 980 PRO 1TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
HDD: Seagate BarraCuda 6TB 3.5in SATA HDD, ST6000DM003
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon RX 6600 XT GAMING OC 8G, 8GB
PSU: Corsair RM1000x 1000W Power Supply
Chassis: Fractal Design Meshify S2 Blackout E-ATX Case, T/G Window, No PSU
OS: Windows 10
Monitor: Dell Monitor C2422HE

3) BIOS Version: I won't be able to provide this till tomorrow as I need to let the chkdsk run which most likely take till tomorrow to finish.

4) the PSU is 16 months old.

Hi @Lutfij
chkdsk finished earlier than expected, my BIOS version is 1502. I see that 1603 is now released.

it doesn't look like mine has a latch at the bottom of the GPU , see pic below, but I can try to use that trim tool to remove the GPU from the standard latch for that PCIe slot.

the chkdsk did not fix the issue.
so my next step is to "reset the PC" using that guide I shared. But I also heard that I rebooting with different RAM sticks to see if it might be a particular RAM stick that's faulty.

So wanted to know what I should do next and in what order out of the options below, unless there is something else I should try also?

  • try with different ram sticks to identify if one of my ram sticks is faulty
  • move the GPU into the correct slot
  • "reset the PC"
  • update BIOS to 1603

There is a latch, if you look at where the T and the E is on the back of the GPU, extrapolate in the direction towards the board's PCIe slot, you'll see there's a latch. Before you disengage the latch, you will need to remove the screws holding the GPU in place on the expansion brackets on the case. Before you do that, make sure you've powered down the system and disconnected from the wall and display.
