Prescott or Northwood

I've bought a P4-2.8Ghz (socket 478 prescott with its pack fan) system and the cpu fan noise bothers me a lot:
When I start my computer, the noise is neglectible but after few minutes that the tempreture becomes stable the noise increases to a very loud level (even if no program is running or the system case is open!). The noise wouldn't decrease until computer turn off!
I want to ask you: If prescott becomes this HOT in every situation, is the same thing true for northwood? If I change my CPU with a 512KB northwood can I get rid of this LOUD noise?

I have a Prescott 3200 with Gigabyte 3D cooler pro, and noise aint so bad.

Sure its processor, what are temps when noise raises.
Did you seat your processor.
Northwood runs cooler than Prescott.

When the temps start to rise in either the Scottie or the Woody the fan rpm's spool up to as much as 5,000 on the stock cooler. A little like bees living in your head. A Zalman 7000 AlCu will run at 2700 rpm with the 92mm fan and do as good a job of cooling. Forget the speed control and just plug it straight into the CPU-fan buss.

Of course the Northwood runs cooler, it also performs better in most programs.

and the Gigabyte 3D cooler pro will work for all, and noise aint so bad either, its variable and is directed downward to cool off chipset.

If it's going to cost $ get a new fan, if it's free, get the better chip.

I,am no CPU expert but if you can still get a Northwood buy it. I read all the time about prescott's overheating and overclocking issues.

Anyway aren't prescotts old technology and already superceeded.

I wonder if intels new chip design has overcome the Prescott's heat issues and if there overclock ability is still OK.

I have an Pres 3200 running with about a 7% overclock running F@H 100% 24-7 and use it for other work throughout day.
Temp gets warm, but does not get danger. I would like it cooler, but runs stable and not to load. My fan varies 2000 to 4000rpm manually. I run it about 2800rpm while running F@H.

My point is, I have not had any horrible head issue, other than I know about it. At least its stable, and damn fast I might add.

Changing CPU won't get rid of any noise. When does a CPU makes noise? The only time I think a CPU makes noise is when your CPU is frying like a sizzling bacon. Changing fan is optional or using headphone or turn the speaker louder is ideal too. You could even turn off the computer and the noise will disappear like magic.

A retail 2.8Ghz northwood comes with a much quieter fan than the 2.8Ghz Prescott. I know, because I've built both here at work.

As someone else said, if it's free change over to a Retail Northwood, otherwise just get a decent cooler + make sure you have decent case airflow.

Well I haven't either since I quit dating "Bucktooth Sally". I had to get rid of the copper-core stock 3.2C cooler. Even with a Northwood, when you clock-up and play FarCry for a while that damn thing would just scream! Really like the Zalman!
