I was thinking of waiting till the 890FX comes out in order to see if I can grab a cheaper 790FX motherboard, but I am not sure if that is a good idea.

Do you think that the 790FX motherboard will raise in price in response to demand from people wanting to gain a Phenom six core cpu?

Hi newcomer and welcome to the Tom's hardware forum.

Rise? I don't think so. The 890FX comes out with the Thuban on April 26th. The Crosshair IV (with 890FX) comes out around $250 (not sure about that info). Now, for example, the price of the Gigabyte 790FXTA $179.99, rise? until for example $200?. If i'm right, definitely I spend $50 more and buy the new 890FX that comes with new features and support the Thuban without BIOS update.

I was just hearing about how the 890FX wasn't much of an update over the 790FX and many would want to buy the 790FX so they had more cash to upgrade to the Phenom II x6.

Thanks for your reply.

The new updates over the 790FX in the 890FX is the SB850 southbridge, which natively supports SATA 3.0. USB 3.0 is added on to most 800-series chipsets as well. But if you don't plan on using Crucial SSD's, the new Velociraptors, or the Seagate Barracuda XT (the only drives that currently support SATA 3.0) then you should probably stick with the 790FX and use the money you save on the shiny new Phenom II X6 Black Edition ($300). So if the new "features" don't really matter to you, stick with the 709FX. Also, I doubt the 790FX boards would rise in price.

790X is the basic platform for the AM3 CPUs. 790GX is the 790X chipset w/ integrated graphics (Radeon HD 3300). 790FX is the 790X on steroids, with no integrated graphics but with enough PCIe lanes for quad CrossFireX at x8/x8/x8/x8 or dual at x16/x16 or tri at x16/x8x/8.

Oh Ok, now I understand the diff. between the 790GX and 790FX.

I just ordered the 790X. I will hopefully run the Phenom X6 sometime in the future.

Once SATA 6gb/s becomes standard, I guess I could swap the mobo out.

Gosh, I hate how everything changes every freaking month :(

I was gonna get a 890 mobo but they lack all the features of the 790X boards so I plan on getting a USB 3.0 and SATA III PCI Express Card and come to think of it I'm not getting any SSD's or raptors and there arent any USB 3.0 devices I need.790X FTW!

I've seen a WD Caviar Black 640gb SATA3 at 60€. I'm gonna buy it for my new PC as OS disk, an SSD is too expensive for me :(
