Another brilliant idea... Now people will complain that's its stupid they have to "opt in" to have their internet uncensored. Other people will complain that not all of the porn is being filtered and will want to sue their ISPs for it. Maybe some non-porn websites will get "accidentally" filtered too just to spice things up a little...

Its just like that law that forces websites to inform you that they use cookies... Completely pointless.

What bothers me is the whole "opt-in" rather than an "opt-out" clause. If you opt-in (you want your porn, kink, fetish, eroticism, etc. in the privacy of your home), bet you dollars to donuts, your name goes on some dirty little black list somewhere in the annals of bureaucracy. Which then later gets to be called forth as evidence for job applications, credit reporting, criminal allegations, and so on.

Oh look, someone accused you of sexual harassment, and you opted out of the national porn filter, you must be guilty. Oh look, your soon to be ex-spouse wants the kids and you opted-in, you must not be a fit parent, you perv. Oh look, you want a job as a teacher... cop... minister...

Yeah, I agree, welcome back to 1984.

These sorts of things should always be an OPT OUT ! ! ! Option... Because now I would have to contact my ISP and Telco everytime a legitimate site is blocked... RATHER... than not care if porn is on my internet or not and just leave it as is...
"Hi Telus, can you unblock X site... " "no, it is part of the national filter so it is blocked for everyone" I don't have a problem with the idea of people protecting themselves or their kids ( plus the police could put sex offenders on the list right !!! )... This is just not the right way to execute the policy... OPT OUT people ! !

This doesn't need to happen, if only there was parental control programs or even better parental control settings on routers and operating systems, oh wait, there already is it's just these stupid, incompetent parents that don't know/understand. The parents need educating, censorship isn't the job of ISP's.

UK should prepare to see the sales of that 10% of ISPs skyrocket and the 90% will soon step back and remove the policies. Im pretty sure they know just how many people use the internet for porn often, and they know they are stepping in crap by making them have to prove they are over 18 and want to watch porn. UK gov must be funding them in some way for them to just agree to lose sales. UK citizens will be pissed, though I believe it wont be as outspoken as other dislikes to government policies there. watching porn is something the grand majority of people do in secret, and they wont like to have their names on any hackable list. this is a bad decision for everyone involved, except for that smart 10%.
