Hi
I have been one month on this problem.. I have tried 50 ways to fix it..
I have a new HP Laser printer P1102 usb connected.
Im running Win xp SP3

The printer will NOT install from the onboard installer or from the CD
Both times I get an error and it says .. This printer could not be installed etc..

I CAN install it from ADD PRINTER. But it will not print !!!!

This computer has no problem printing to my old HP 6L printer but its broken.
The new Printer works fine from my laptop so the printer is fine, the cable is fine.
Ive had the HP guy in India get it going.. which he did.. but it stopped working after a reboot.

So.. after a myriad of ways trying to fix this.. i decided to try d/l some NON HP drivers.. I chose Adobe / Lexmark Universal drivers which would you believe.. WOULD NOT INSTALL.
http://www.lexmark.com/en_US/software/upd/upd-download.shtml

Hmmm !! they got 3/4 through the install.. and I came to a page that would not let me progress.. it told me i needed to check my usb cable, reset printer etc.. but of course none of this worked.

So I decided to give MicroSoft Universal print Driver a go..
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff556567(v=vs.85).aspx

Next tried Richoh Universal printer drivers
http://support.ricoh.com/bb/html/dr_ut_e/rc2/model/p_i/p_ien.htm#Microsoft Windows XP

these were installed as instructed using the ADD PRINTER function.
Again.. not able to print.

It seems this is some kind of communication problem with the USB Ports..
I tried ALL ports..its always the same.. NO PRINT

Funny thing is.. the HP Printer is communicating with the computer because when I plug the USB cable in.. up pops the Auto Installer.

BUT on the other hand.. the HP Printer Diagnostic tool discovers the printer, but says it is not connected to usb.

Really weird..

I 'm out of ideas.. I really need someone who is prepare to help me get this going.. its not gonna be an easy one ..

Please someone with good knowledge of Printers, USB and Drivers can you assist ?

This is a follow on from this abandoned thread..

This probably won't help you, sorry, but I have had a HP 1018 Laser printer for about 4 or 5 years and it always worked great. About 8 months ago along with several other upgrades I got W7Pro and went to HP's site to get the latest greatest driver. Now, it stops working so often it is almost humorous. I have found after huge amounts of frustration and tons of blank pages printed that the only way to fix it is to delete the printer. I re-start and let windows find the hardware and install the driver all on its own and then it works fine....for a few weeks....then rinse, repeat!!!! I don't know how HP and or Microsoft screwed up the HP drivers, because mine worked so flawlessly for so long (with both WXP and W7HP), I just kind of have to laugh. I tried the old driver too, but it somehow fails too. I will say that after reading your post, if I do replace this printer anytime soon, it won't be with an HP! Too bad, it was good for quite a while! I have a Canon Pro9000 inkjet (expensive 8 cartridge) and it continues to work fine on the same system.

HP Software is a pain to be honest. Try the following.
Remove it completely.
Disconnect the printer.
Reboot.
First install 'driver only' from HP Support website: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=4110306&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=4110394&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228#113343

Follow EXACTLY the instructions on screen.. i.e. only connect the USB cable when it prompts you.
Having the cable connected before installation means it WILL FAIL. You will need to uninstall and reboot before you can try again!

If the driver only doesn't work, then download the whole package and try it as above.

Hope this helps, but if not.. as a last resort, you can try windows update.
Sometimes this works better!

Hpmm.. yup sorry, link not working.

Google HP P1102 drivers instead.. that would probably be quicker.
Pick your OS.. then try the driver only link.

As i said above.. if that fails.. then install the whole package.
