The heads need to be cleaned. The process is in the manual. What you see in your example photo is what happens when the printer is not used every day. The microscopic nozzles in the heads clog with dried ink.

Another possible (but less likely) cause is the ink carts being nearly empty, which sometimes gives the banding effects in your pic...
