what would cause the paper in my Lexmark printer to slide to the right and jam the printer.

Rollers, some other issue in the paper path. Also try different paper. Some paper can be slicker than others and not grip the rollers as well. If there are no replaceable rollers in the printer, and it's an inkjet, you will be better off just buying a new one than getting yours fixed.
