Priority Mail warning

I own a UPS Store and got a letter from our local Postmaster. In short,
it reminds us not to use anything desingated for Priority Mail unless
it's used for that purpose. They are starting to crack down on this. If
you send anything with Priority materials and its not sent Priority
they will send it back to you. Multiple offenders will have these
pieces confiscated and/or prosecuted.

Basically the cost of Priority Mail has already factored in the use of
these materials, but only for their intended purpose. With so many
people using them for other uses it will either raise the cost of
Priority Mail or they will not offer the free materials anymore.

A store 3 miles from me had a customers shipment of over 400
individually packaged DVD's come back because he turned the Priority
Mail boxes inside out.

Just something to keep in mind fellas.

How did USPS find out that the guy was using priority mail box inside
out? They can't open the boxes to check, correct?

actually ups discourages the use of brown paper. not only does it not
provide any strength, if the paper gets caught up anywhere along the
massive conveyor belt system it will tear the package like you wouldnt
believe. ive gone on hub tours and seen it happen.

basically the brown paper is for cheap ass people to wrap a shoe box or
a garment box because they refuse to buy or seek out a real shipping
box. the old timers do it all the time. when their brown paper covered
box arrives beat to hell they want their broken crystal vase to be paid
via claims. not. i cant tell you how many times this happens.

Hi,

That is good to know, but here in Atlanta they would never ship a
priority box unless its sent that way. Do you mean like when folks
reverse the boxes etc?

Hi,

I see that is what you meant, turning them inside out:) I guess it does
not take too much figuring on there part to know those boxes have to be
theirs:)

It happened to me. I occasionally sell 7" records on ebay and use whatever
cardboard I have on hand. I cut panels from one and turned them inside out
and mailed a record in it. They opened it up, photocopied the inside of
the cardboard, and sent the photocopy to me with a nasty note about not
using them. It seemed pretty petty to me. I think it was a used box too.

Ahhh.. like being in the post office around Christmas and seeing what
some folks actually think is 'packaging'. There should be an annual prize
for the dumbest packing of the season ;)

Perhaps.. the post office should offer a discount if we priority mail using
fedex or ups boxes ;-)

A lot of those small boxes that are flat when you get them are printed on
the inside.

I think it funny when I get a ups delivered box with usps priority tape all
over it. :)

Well, UPS doesn't care, that's a double win for them. Draining USPS' coffers
two ways.

I've started to see the ones where it's printed on the inside too.

One reason I use USPS service is because they provide those materials and
with Paypal the label is made for you as well.

Hi,

Yeah that brown paper with folks addresses on it doesnt do much good
stuck to a roller:) Tape, Tape, Tape is the name of the game with any
package. I have only had 2 out of 4000 packages in the last 3 years
become lost or damaged, due to good taping.

I e-mailed USPS about used boxes:

What is your policy on using _USED_ USPS boxes w/ another carrier?

(I'm aware of your policy w/ new boxes.)

Their response:

Dear Mr. Pehrson,

Terms of Agreement for using USPS Supplies

I understand that Express Mail®, Priority Mail®, Global Express
Guaranteed®, Global Express Mail® and Global Priority Mail®
packaging is the property of the United States Postal Service
and is provided solely for sending Express Mail®, Priority Mail®,
Global Express Guaranteed®, Global Express Mail® and Global
Priority Mail®. Misuse may be a violation of federal law.

I can vouch for his taping ability. I am amazed at how long it takes me
to open a package from Mark due to the amount of tape he uses! I
previously thought those molded and glued plastic shells on the kids
toys were a lot of work to open, but Mark's taping has them beat...

:)

So I guess you should dump the used boxes on their doorstep instead of
recycling them or even throwing them in the trash.

Since it is their property, just dump them in a heap on your sidewalk and tell
them to pick them up

-- or --

put them in a mailbox, they should get a kick out of that one.

I can see how that applies to new boxes. But if you've mailed a box to me,
I haven't agreed to any terms of agreement. I don't see how that can force
me to agree to it. BTW I have sent a used priority mail box for non
priority mail. They gave me a hard time, I pointed out it was clearly used
and I'd marked through the priority stuff with a marker and they let it go.
Could be they just didn't know the rules.

I think they're saying that they own the boxes no matter what, so since
the sender doesn't own the box he's not able to transfer title to the
receiver. It would sure be funny to see the USPS sue someone over this
though, it would do nothing but make them look incredibly stupid. They
probably just got tired of arguing with you and gave your package a
little "extra" handling.

I was just refused a parcel shipment because I used a "used" part of a
priority box inside out for one side. I talked to the manager & he said
its the rules & they can stop the package in route & ship it back if
they didn't catch it there. I told him twice that that was chicken chit
but what can you do?, they are the only game in town!

Thats exactly what I am doing! Just called the post office again, said
that since the used priority boxes belong to them & since I no longer
will ship w/ them then they must take these boxes back! I can not use
them according to their own regs, the law. You should have heard the
spitting & sputtering on the other end. I'm having a meeting with the
manager tomorrow. I have 2 car loads of used boxes that they MUST take.
I suggest everyony do the same. If they want to be chicken chit, so can
we.

If you use the website to get free boxes, I just ordered some today, there
is a standard agreement page that says that the boxes are their property and
that you agree to use them properly. I don't have a problem using priority
mail, it's generally only a bit more expensive than 1st class for small
stuff. My mailman is also a nice guy who will pick them up from me anyday
as long as I leave him a note in the mailbox.
