My Younger brother was telling me the other day that in quake 3 based games,
there is some benefit to having the monitors refresh rate set to 100Hz. Does
anyone know if this is true?

I heard of something that apparently happens in the quake 3 engine when it
runs at 125 fps (longer jumps or something?) but never heard of the 100Hz
thing. He gave me the old argument of the monitor not displaying any of the
fps over the refresh rate, so why does he want the game at 125 fps and the
monitor at 100Hz?

Apparently all the "Pro-Gamers" do this in the COD clans or some such. He
purchased a 17" CRT over a 19" CRT because of this "performance enhancment"

Anyone?

And you believe him? Sorry, but Not.

Sad lamer.

With an over-worked monitor.

Your refresh rate has nothing to do with the COD jump glitch. Raising
your fps to 125 in COD enables you to jump into positions that usually
are not intended for anyone to be there, apparently it is a glitch in
the quake 3 engine. This only really helps in multiplayer and a good
example is Axis spawn in the Dawnville map. There is a wooden
structure to the left, which after repeatedly tapping the jump button
at the right concrete rubble will enable you to jump onto the wooden
platform, remember to raise your fps to 125 before you attempt this.
This tactic is normally used by a sniper and permitts you to look into
street leading to the hotel, into the church, the door entry from the
bombed out orphanage and protect targets A and B, in addition your
elevated position is a surprise to many people. In competitive play
this has now been banned so expect to forfeit the round or match if
you use it. However use it all you want if Pub servers but don't
blame me if you get kicked/banned!

There are loads of places where this jump glitch can be used,
Dawnville has loads, Carentan, POW camp also has some...just a matter
of experimenting or being observant around your fellow gamers.

If like me he has vsync enabled then his monitor wont display more frames
per sec than
the refresh rate - in my case 75. I find that to be plenty and I dont think
that having an
extra 25 frames per sec will improve my game any. I play Day of Defeat btw.

Hi,

In article <37uieoF5he7htU1@individual.net>, Les Steel <a@aolnot.com> wrote:
#My Younger brother was telling me the other day that in quake 3 based games,

Unlike the Q3 engine 125fps jump bug, monitor refresh is uncoupled from
game dynamics. HOWEVER it is part of the performance profile of the
video card itself. Changing the refresh rate will have a small effect on
the overall spead of the video card.

So, let's say you set up a system and get it close to 125fps in a Q3
game, but maybe it's a little too fast or two slow. Maybe you mess with
system memory settings but the results are too gross (bracket the
desired fps). Then you can (hopefully) fine-tune the fps by messing with
some video settings, including refresh.

#I heard of something that apparently happens in the quake 3 engine when it
#runs at 125 fps (longer jumps or something?) but never heard of the 100Hz

It could be that someone hit the magic 125fps by doing the final tweak
of changing the monitor refresh to 100Hz. Then this leaked out as
"gospel" where you *had* to do this, when in reality it is only the
magic number for this particular system.

#Apparently all the "Pro-Gamers" do this in the COD clans or some such. He
#purchased a 17" CRT over a 19" CRT because of this "performance enhancment"

If it makes him happy, who cares? Well, he's your younger brother, so you're
allowed to torture him by disagreeing, if you so please.

Ken.

He is correct. There is a bug with the Quake 3 engine where the world is
run at a rate equal to the current framerate. In addition, there are cases
where the framerate is capped at the monitor refresh rate because.

Honestly, he should be focusing on a better video card rather than worrying
about the refresh rate. A monitor is only as good as the video card it's
plugged into.

FPS and refresh rate are so different that he clearly doesn't know what he's
talking about. But I don't know anything about 100Hz causing something
special.
