pROBABLE FRAME RATE??

Hi guys, i've just resintalled windows and have not connected to the net with the computer. I installed the latest drivers yadda yadda yaa but i'm experiencing a frame rate of 70fps a second average in hl2 in reso at 1024x768 and everything on highest apart from vsync.

My specs are

gainward 6800 ultra clocked at 430 mhz
athlon 3500+
1024 corsair twinxlpro
and 10gb hd

i've run some endurance tests on all components and found the hd to be alot slower then expected however i changed it and the points for that test have gone up however i'm still getting 70fps with no anti virus apps runnin in the background, nothing but essential windows stuff.

vsync is disabled, does that hamper the performance or increase it?

This might have been the cause of your 70FPS limitation. Vsync set the MAX FPS with your monitor refresh rate. There is often good reason to use Vsync... Less tearing, don't force your GPU to generate hundreds of FPS while your monitor can only show you 70 or 85 frames per second anyway.

But, in fast-paced shooter this might be a problem, because if the GPU can generate half a frame, it is not displayed, it is scrapped...

I don't have the time to explain all the details... If you search the GPU forum, there was a few good thread about it couple of months ago.

check your video card properties, via control panal, and make sure vsync is off under proformance or 3d.

Watch out for the <b><font color=red>bloody</font color=red></b> Fanboys!

yea done, but no change. Very annoyin but i'll sought the problem out later. I reach around 68,000 points in aquamark3 on average, should i really be getting 70fpsin hl2. and lookin at the fps in hl2 will vampire bloodlines be fine as well

You have to use a refresh rate fix or the refresh rate override in the nvidia control panel. This is a known winxp/win2k problem.

I hope that this is not the HDD you run now because it is a real shame to cripple such a system with that poor performing/low capacity HDD...You should have spent less on the CPU and get a decent HDD...
