Alienware 18, i7-4700MQ, 8gb ram, dual nVidia 780Ms (problem persisted when I disabled SLI). Problem started on windows 7; free update to win 10 didn't stop it. Basically even if I restart my laptop, 99% of the times I will have 80% memory use by the time it finishes loading explorer. Task manager shows only normal processes; all of them combined do not add up to half a gig. The resource manager confirms this, but it also says that 7-7.5gb of memory are being used at any given time while nothing is running. This is out of my 8gb total (typically 0.5-1gb is standby and < 250mb is classified as free memory). Needless to say, stuttering, stalling, and everything else you'd associate with running out of memory happens the second I try to open a game.
What I've tried:
Updated all drivers (it BRIEFLY - 15 minutes or so - worked properly after reinstalling the nVidia drivers, but it works properly sometimes anyway so there may be no correlation).
Up to date McAfee virus scan
Startup program list void of non-essential programs
Windows memory check confirms memory is functioning properly.
Uninstalled Razer, which the internet claims has a known memory leak (didn't help).
What I haven't tried:
Throwing the damned thing out the window, because I'm a college student and can't afford another one (also it's a really epic desktop replacement when it works properly).
I consider myself to be reasonably computer competent but I'm out of my element at this point. I can't even think of what *might* be wrong.
Please help.
