Problem connecting 2 pc's for sharing

I've been asked to set up network sharing between 2 pc's in the same room, to allow a usb3 hdd to be shared between them. One of the pc's is win10 home premium, the other is win7 home.

When I try and connect from the win7 to the win10, the pc can't be found. I can connect from the win10 to the win7 and can see the shared drive and its contents, but when I try to open anything I get a "there is a network problem" error.

I have the hdd connected with full access permissions for everyone. The pc's are on a home network on the win7, private on the win10. Network discovery, File and print sharing and Public folder sharing are all turned on. Password protected sharing is turned off.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

Apologies. I forgot to give you thanks for your (correct) suggestion. This is strange as I have never used Homegroup before and was always able to share among my home server, networked drive and 2 Win7 Ultimate x64 pc's with no problems. Then, soon after this problem occurred, I updated one of the 2 Win7 pc's to Win10 and encountered the same problem myself. So thanks very much for your answer. It certainly helped me out.
