I'm working on making simple upgrades to my 8-ish year old desktop (Gateway GT5238E), which I have recently given to my partner's son.

I purchased an Intel E6700 processor from Ebay last week, in hopes that it would be a compatible upgrade for the machine. Upon installation, it did not yield a positive result.

With power, the machine seemed to boot normally, and then seemed to revert to a different boot option, submitting no output to the screen, but seeming to fully power all devices, ie: all fans running on max output, hdd spinning at full speed, all LED's active. The machine continued to produce this output with no Windows boot for extended time, until a hard-reset.

Hoping to find out if I've missed something!

UPDATE:

I've updated the BIOS with this version.

I was able to start the computer, and boot windows successfully. However, the machine would only boot with 2GB ram, (I had to remove them all, and am still unable to boot Windows with the other 1GB (2x 512MB) installed.. In it's current state, the computer is very latent -- shows no signs of any performance increase -- and has trouble keeping power -- several BSODs as well as random restarts.

Do you think that the 2007 BIOS version will be responsible for the CPU to lack communication with the rest of the machine?

OR -- Is it possible that the problem is stemming from a poor PSU connection? The PSU is as old as the machine, and the machine -- before any replacements -- has been suffering from random restarts for years.

Thanks for your help, so far!

Drew

PS. Should I mark this as an answered thread and move the question elsewhere? I'm new here ^ ^;
