Problem getting 42" HDTV to work on pc

hey everyone. Im new here and I need some help. I dont usually ask for help but this has me stumped. I have a gateway sx2800 system. Im running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and here are the system specs:
Processor Q8200 Intel Quad 2.33 ghz.
4gb of ddr3 memory.
650 gb HD.
Video is integrated intel g43/g45 express chipset.
monitor is HP LP2465 widescreen lcd.

The system came with a vga port and an Hdmi port. I have the HP hooked up to the vga. when i plug my 42" HDTV into the hdmi port, both screens go blank and my computer reboots. I get picture on both until it reaches windows, then both screens go blank again. I rebooted using only the HP. I boot to windows and everything is fine after it tells me the system recovered from a serious error. I try to plug the hdmi in again. both screens are blank again. only this time i quickly removed the hdmi and the HP monitor comes back up without a reboot saying the windows 7 graphics driver stopped responding but has recovered. I then uninstalled the graphics all together and rebooted. I installed the vista drivers for the graphics and tried again. Same thing happens. Now when i uninstalled the graphics completly again from the device manager and shut down, i took the vga monitor out and plugged in the tv and booted up. It will boot to windows then, but only using a standard generic graphics driver. The video was of course horrid. I then installed the drivers for the graphics and rebooted without un plugging the hdmi and without plugging in the HP monitor. Again all i got was a blank screen with sound when booting into windows. This led me to believe it was probably a driver problem and not a compatibility issue. but heres the thing, i also have a 20" hdtv. So i ran some tests on that one. I plugged it into the pc with hdmi just as i did the 42" hdtv. It worked perfectly. It even let me run the HP monitor and 20" hdtv at the same time when i set to intel dual display. so i was like wth is going on? why isnt it letting the 42" work. All i want to do is stream movies from my pc to the 42". so i then unplugged the hdmi cable from the pc. hooked it back to 42" tv and for some odd reason the intel media accelerator options still allowed me to switch to digital television in the options. Then, it worked! I had media center running on my tv and playing a movie just fine. then i tried to figure out how to get the black bars off the screen and get a bigger picture. when i was clicking around in the options i accidently clicked the refresh rate from 60hz to 75hz. then boom it was gone again and ive tried everything and cant get it back. Is it possible i need to reinstall all the original software and go back to vista 64 bit? I didnt try to hook the tv up until i upgraded to windows 7 so im not sure if it could be a windows 7 issue or not. Any help at all would be apreciated and I thank you in advance.

It sounds like the default screen resolution on your HP is not supported by the LCDTV. I had the same problem when connecting my Samsung 32" LCDTV to my PC. What I had to do was to first connect my PC to my old 19" BENQ monitor and set the screen resolution that is supported in the LCDTV. Then all I had to do was reconnect the LCDTV and bingo!!!!

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try that. Would it be possible to change the resolution on the hp to a lower setting? Or will the tv always load the default? the default on the hp is 1920x1200 which is too high. If not, i do have a 17" dell lcd i could try. If the dell works, would i be able to hook the hp back up when i get the tv working to switch back and forth when needed? or will that just cause the problem all over again?

Wonder why i had it working before then? grrr lol Anyways would this card work in this system. PSU is 220 watts but others have said it works because it is low power comsumption and with my case, looks like best card for the money as i need a card thats low profile and low power comsumption.

Ilovekaren,

Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to also check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback with driver support.

ok, so i tried flabbergasted's idea and hooked up my 17" dell which has a default/maximum resolution of 1024x768. everything was working ok as usual... then i plugged in the hdmi cable for the hdtv and the dell monitor flickered on and off a couple time then i got the blue screen of death. so then i thought id try and boot into safe mode with networking using only the hdtv via hdmi port. it booted into windows with no problems since the graphics driver wasnt loaded. so then id thought id try a vga on the tv to vga on motherboard. it worked perfect and max resolution on the tv. ofcourse that was only a test cause wth wants to hook vga to a 42" hdtv lol bottom line i think is since the hdmi port worked perfect on the 20" hdtv, it is just not capable of running the 42". I guess ill have to install a low profile HD graphics card to get the results i want. Actually this kinda ticks me off.. why put the hdm i port on board if its not usable for what everyone wants it for. I guess its just for a regualr hd computer monitor, maybe 27-28" or so. Im gonna try to find the best low profile/low power comsumption card i can find and see how that works. Thanks everyone for all your help.

I have an sx2800 and have the exact same card from newegg works great no issues so far. I also put in a dlink wireless card

Thanks for the info. I will be getting this card. IK dont really need a wireless card, so do you thin k I could take out that worthless modem and put a tv tuner in there? Im sure I can but just wanted to make sure. thanks again,

I wouldnt know about a tv tuner if it would use up more of the 220w psu. I took out my modem and swapped it with a wireless card so far works fine not sure about a tv tunner though. BTW have you heard anything about a psu upgrade for the unit?

hey well im gonna completely disable the onboard graphics and the sapphire as far as i know is only about 7 more watts then the integrated graphics so not much of a difference there so it may work. i think i might try it and let you know how it goes. As far as a psu upgrade, i know there is one for the dell slimline so only a matter of time before they make one for the gateway. you can check out this thread it may help.
