I am trying to get an HDD working on my PC, I already have an SSD with the OS on it and some files working fine. When Im in the bios and look to the boot options, it my WD Black hdd shows up but when im in windows 10, it wont recognize the disk. I tried going into the computer management and it shows Disk 0 (hdd) as unknown and not initialized. Its a 3 TB hdd so I tried to do an gpt initialization and it says the specified disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum required for GPT disks. I also tried the data lifeguard from WD and both the quick and full test failed. I also tried connecting it to different sata ports and nothing changed. There is nothing on it so I dont need to worry about data recovery. Please if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there axm9912,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. 🙁

I would agree with Hellfire13. We will get a clearer picture if you could post a screen of Disk Management.
Shouldn't your SSD appear as drive 0?

What error messages did you get when testing the drive with WD's DLG tool?
How is the drive recognized by BIOS?

My suggestion would be to attach it to another system as a secondary drive and try to initialize it. That way, you will be sure whether there is something wrong with the HDD. In case the issue persists, you can contact the place you got it from or WD's Support and eventually RMA it.
WD Blacks usually come with 5 years of limited warranty.

Hope this will help,

In WD's DLG: first, before I do any test it says the drive is Not Available in the Smart Status. When I try the Quick test it says, "Quick Test::SMART Enable Operation error!" and for the extended test it says the same thing except extended instead of Quick. I will try and connect it to another computer.

the drive has to be converted to ntfs file system in order to be recognised...and for tht u have to format it to ntfs...
now, windows by default cannot format any storage device more than 2tb...
so u have to convert it to gpt first and then to ntfs...
thts wat i did when it happnd to me...

Had to RMA it, the new one is working fine but thanks for the feedback
