Problem installing hardware usb flash drive

Hello,
When I plug in a USB flash drive I get a dialog saying "There was a problem installing this hardware "Disk drive" An error occured during installation. The system cannot find the specified file"

I am not offered any choices other than to click finsh.

USB flash drives used to work fine. I have tried several different flash drives - always the same result

BTW I'm running XP SP on an HP laptop.

It might have been infected with a virus. Do you have antivirus software?

Yes I have anti virus software. Also this happens with ANY USB drive I plug in, although not with my USB mp3 player
