Problem Reading Folder Contents

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if it's the right place to post this but I would really appreciate some help.
I'm having some trouble with my hard drive. It all started when a friend wanted me to format his external hard drive, so I copied all of his data on to one of my drives and formatted his disk using a utility that came with it (he wanted it as FAT32). Anyway, I did it kind of in a hurry and it seems that I also copied the "System Volume Information" and "Recycled" folder on his disk into a folder on my disk by accident. So now every time I want to enter the folder where I put this stuff, windows says that "the disk is not formatted" and asks me if I want to format it now. Also, and more importantly, the stuff in some of my other folders has "disappeared" and is not showing up in the windows explorer. The drive is being very slow when I try to access some folders but not with others and when the computer is idle it makes a continuous "click......click.......click..........click" sound, quite slowly. When I try to copy files from certain folders, I also get an error message saying "cyclic redundancy check" (I'm not sure if that is the exact translation - my version of winows is in French). Now I'm not sure exactly what the problem is here because prior to copying this data, my disk was fine. I have suspicion that my inadvertently copying the "system volume information" into a folder on my disk has somewhat confused window's reading of the filesystem but I'm just wondering what is causing my disk to be slow only for reading some files and also what is causing that continuous slow clicking sound. I tried having a look SMART readings for this disk with Speedfan, but it says that fitness and performance are both at 100%. I have also tried using a program called File Recovery to try and retrieve some of my data, but it can't pick up the majority of the "disappeared" files.
Does anyone know how I can fix this? Would deleting the copied "system volume information" be able to fix things? How can I delete it, seeing as windows won't let me enter or delete the folder in question? I really need to retrieve those files so if anyone has any ideas...
Thanks

Sounds like a failing hard drive. SMART won't always tell you when there is a problem... and you of course have to make sure SMART checking is enabled in BIOS before it will tell you anything at all.

Download the utility disk for you hard drive from the manufacturer. This will do a thorough test on the drive and definitively tell you if your hard drive is failing or not.

Are you runnning SP2? without SP1 or SP2 windows doesnt support drives >137g. make sure you have the service pack installed and then run the error checking option in windows and see if it finds any errors. you might get the data back and you might not.

Just a guess, hope it helps.
