I decided to re-install win2k. I boot the system up with WinMe boot disk, format the c partition, run smartdrv.exe, change directory to H:\I386 and run winnt.exe. Now I got a message: Setup was unable to install Windows Boot Loader. Ensure that your c: drive is formatted and that the drive is not damaged.

Of course the drive is formatted and not damaged. I suspect windows me boot disk might be the problem. I desperately seek help. By the way to install dos is not a option which requires to format whole disk and I have some important data in other partitons.

Thanks.

If you're trying to install Windows 2000, shouldn't you be booting from the 2000 boot disks (or CD), not the ME boot disk?????

ya dude, Its not gonna work like that. you gotta use the win2k cd or the win2k bootdisks.

Yea...when trying to reinstall win2k I thought..hey..install win2k from my hd, it will be much faster than from the CD. Well, no go! I had to boot with my win2k CD! If you need help creating a bootable win2k cd from you win2k files let me know, I can help.

If you wish to maintain a dual boot system, the prefered way is to have a good installation of Win 9x, on your C drive first. I then created several more partitions in NTFS
one of which becomes my NT 5/Win2K boot drive. I then ran the Win2K cd from Win 9x and asked Win2K to install itself in another partition. If you do not want to dual boot I believe you can just run Win2k install from the cd and let it nuke your previous installation. There are pretty easy to follow instructions available on the Msoft web site, hope this helps.

Hi, guys. I successfully reinstalled Win2k.

Somehow my Win2k cd is not bootable. What I did is search the web for a Win98SE boot disk. Download it and boot the computer with it. After that installing Win2k is just a piece of cake by executing H:\I386\winnt.exe. Could someone explain why Win2k can not be installed on a system booted with a WinMe boot disk?
