[SOLVED] Problem understanding RAM memory

Hi Freinds

I am having trouble understanding RAM . I use CPU-Z on my computer and learn that I have 800 Mhz speed ram sticks. But the mobo bus speed is only running at 200 mhz. AMD chip. I did read that "something" is effectively cutting the Ram Stick speed by half. my DRam Timing is running 334.8 Mhz ddr2 sticks.... I am still confused at what device is the bottle neck on speed ... the Board bus speed to the Northbridge or the CPU itself.

Than the the BIG question how do I understand a Boards speed without CPU=Z software. How to understand the online spec's> ??

Solution
First you must understand DDR (Double-Data Rate). Let's say you have DDR2 800. Since RAM is DDR it transfers data on both the on and the off portion of the cycle. So we can say that the speed of transfer is doubled from the frequency of the on/off cycle, hence the "DDR". So DDR2 800 memory would show a frequency of 400MHz, which is a measure of the on and off fruequency. We often call it 800MHz to make it easy; however, 800MT/s (Mega Transfers per second) would be more accurate since the on/off frequency is 400MHz but the data transfer frequency is 800MT/s.

Now, if you say your memory shows 334.8MHz, that would be 333MHz (the bus doesn't always operate at the exact frequency), then you are operating at DDR2 666. There is a reason it...

Primarily I want to buy a new Mobo Cpu and Ram. and I dont want to make a mistake on buying a pinto mobo and a ferrari CPU.

Thanks for the help Volkgren but can you answer the original question....what is the bottleneck device that is crippling mhz speeds on a system ? Is the the north bridge mobo or the Cpu stats? how would I identify this on internet product page stats? thx.


 
It appears you have 4 memory sticks installed? 2 of which are not being recognized. Or, you have 2 sticks installed and they are in the wrong slots.

It could be that you are using different types of memory modules. As I asked before, I need to know more details about your RAM. How many and what are the exact part numbers for all of your memory modules?

I have two sticks both identical in every way. in slots one and two closest to the CPu. both slots colored blue while three and four are empty colored white.

that seems incomplete. The only PC2-5 is PC2-5300 which is DDR2 666. If that is what you have then your memory is running at full speed.
