Problem with black screen/no signal after monitor change

I have a problem with all of my screens going black when changing them.

I have 2 main displays on my desktop that are almost always plugged in. One with DVI and the other one with HDMI.

I only have one 980TI card so when i want to watch a movie i remove the HDMI from the card and plug in the one leading to my TV and the screen goes instantly black for my DVI connected monitor and no response from the TV so i am forced to cut the power and boot it up again.

If i want to use my HTC vive i do the same thing, remove the HDMI and insert the one from the Vive. Same problem, screen goes black. No cursor or anything. Just "No signal".

I have tried plugging the previous monitor back in, but still no signal for any monitor.

I have also tried completely uninstalling Nvidia control panel / GeForce Experience and any drivers and reinstalling without success.

My specs are: gpu 980TI, cpu 980x, 16gb ram, some asus rampage motherboard. Let me know if i forgot something.

Would really appreciate the help, since it this happens 100% of the times i switch a monitor, and i do that quite often. Thanks.

I don't believe HDMI is a hot swappable connector. it probably causing a reset in the video card, best bet is to get yourself a hdmi switch and leave cables in place and just press button when you want to switch from PC to TV

Thanks for replying. finally some progress.

I've had this problem a long time now and searched google many times without success. But i didnt know anything about "hot-swapping" and now after doing some research i've found this:

"The HPD (Hot-Plug-Detect) feature is a communication mechanism between a source and a sink device that makes the source device aware that it has been connected/disconnected to/from the sink device. When an HDMI cable is inserted between the two devices, the resulting hot-plug detection instantiates a start-up communication sequence."

I didn't really understand all of that however it seems to me that HDMI is in fact "hot-swappable".

That said i still think a "HDMI switch" sounds like a great idea. Could you possible give me a link to one so i know i'm not buying the wrong thing? Happened resently to me while shopping for a USB hub. Thanks.
