Hey all, so i've been having a problem recently with my comcast modems wifi. Where it's almost constantly in a state of "unidentified network" no internet access, and can't connect to it via wifi on the computer/phone/tablet or anything, and it takes an hour or sometimes more of disconnecting it and reconnecting to attempt to get it to work, and sometimes it just goes out again, same deal. Ethernet connection always seems to be working though, although the box is in a different corner of the house as my room and i wouldn't be able to connect to it directly.

Was wondering if its possible to swap it with the box in my fathers house who doesn't use WiFi at all and is 100% ethernet connected anyways, and his box works fine in all aspects? Not sure if that idea will work. Also do you know if comcast will deliver a new box to a different location than the house, since usually nones there as we're at our workplace/school, if it comes to swapping the box completely.

Sorry for the long question, and thank you very much!

Sometimes, depending on the ISP(Internet Service Provider), you can use your own equipment, which can be very beneficial in many ways. Firstly it can be beneficial because your equipment can be faster then the equipment they provide, DOC SIS 3.0 i believe is the fastest, and it will save you 5-10$ a month, because that is what most ISP's charge on a monthly rate for "Renting" their equipment. To answer your question, yes you can switch out the modems with comcast, but make sure to return their equipment so you arent charged for it, or you can just go to walmart, or where ever else you would like, and buy a wireless router, N300 at least suggested, if you have a big house, with lots of distance, i would even suggest an N450 or N600, but if the distance isnt that far, then the N300 will work just fine at around 35-40 dollars. Sounds like the Cable Modem, which i am assuming has built in wifi, is defective and/or trying to go out, in which case you could just have them replace it. Best of luck!

P.S. You cannot switch Cable modems with your father, and expect them to work, they will have to be programmed, either by on the phone, or having someone come out to the house, but if you are renting the modems from comcast, they will most likely not allow it, and/or want their equipment back or you could face charges for the equipment. You can buy Cable Modems, the good ones are about 175$ though, with the built in N600 Dual Band( dual band is twice the bandwith) so if you are quite a ways away from the wireless router, having a dual band wireless router is a plus as well

Thanks! i think what im going to do is just buy my own modem, was actually looking at the n600 earlier. These comcast modems have been giving me problems since day one. They never turn out good. I think to set it up i just have to do it through the browser when i set it up or like on the phone right?

Yes more then likely will need assistance to get it programmed to your ISP account over the phone or online, you dont necessarily need someone to come do a house call, you sound plenty intelligent enough to be able to do it yourself.
