when i restart my PC and its on all day playing games, i get around 45C but when i get off for the night and let my PC go to sleep and click on my keyboard the next day, my CPU is in the high 80C and stays in the 80s until i restart it then comes back down to 30C. im not running anything when i get on it after its been in sleep.

Solution

its weird because it says on msi afterburner its in the 90c area after the long sleep periods but then i think its a glitch and i get on counter strike or any game and my FPS is horrible and frame drops, then i restart my computer and it says the temps are in the 30c area and its great performance. and games run like they should on a $2000 PC and under max loads my temps are still great, around 50-55c

i have a Corsair h90 water cooling a i7-4790K and a GTX 980 and can the Graphics card have an affect?? i didnt get this issue before i upgraded to the 980!

should i put new thermal paste??

Try running a stress test after you reboot and it claims the temperatures are normal again, if it gets above 85c stop the test. You can try new thermal paste but if the issue is only after you use sleep mode, then it's probably a glitch, I'd recommend not using sleep mode for a week and turn your pc off when it's not going to be in use for long periods of time and monitor your temps to see if they ever get high. The graphics card can't affect CPU temps no.
Edit: I just thought of something, use CPU-Z to check what your CPU speed/voltage is normally and write that down, when you come out of sleep mode and have the temp issue, check your speed and voltage again and let me know please.
